NYC Ferry

Website, UX/UI Design, Branding & Ad Campaign

The NYC Ferry, a public-private partnership between the City of New York and Hornblower Cruises and Events, launched with the goal of becoming as iconic as the city's major transit systems. With no existing brand, the project required the development of a complete visual identity, including a transit map, website design, mobile app, advertising strategy, media buying, landing site graphics, vehicle wraps, DID screens, and animations to establish a cohesive and recognizable presence.

My Role
Collaborated weekly
with stakeholders and Hornblower Cruises’ NYC Ferry marketing team to establish the brand’s identity. Led efforts across print and digital ads, mapping, uniforms, signage, color palette, typography, and graphics, creating a cohesive transit brand for the NYC waterway.

The Challenge
NYC Ferry
was not just a new brand—it aimed to reinvent ferry commuting by creating a fun, relaxing, and accessible experience for both daily riders and tourists. The goal was to market effectively across all demographics while ensuring cost-efficient, inclusive, and adaptable advertising campaigns that could be updated weekly.

Additionally, NYC Ferry required a completely new waterway map system to highlight every ferry route. As a transit map, it needed MTA approval and had to adhere to strict technical guidelines, including the selection of unique route colors that distinguished NYC Ferry from existing MTA services. The approval process was rigorous, requiring multiple revisions and extensive collaboration with MTA engineers.

The Solution
To meet these challenges, I worked closely with stakeholders, the NYC Ferry marketing team, and MTA engineers to ensure every aspect of the brand and transit system met both functional and aesthetic requirements. I developed a cohesive branding strategy across digital and print media, including signage, advertisements, uniforms, and graphics, making NYC Ferry an instantly recognizable part of the city’s transit ecosystem.

For the waterway map, I meticulously followed MTA guidelines while creating a user-friendly design that clearly communicated routes and accessibility. After nearly a year of refinements and approvals, the final map was successfully implemented and remains in use today. While the process was highly technical, it stands as one of my proudest accomplishments as a designer, and the NYC Ferry project as a whole was an incredibly rewarding experience.

Unprecedented Ridership Growth
NYC Ferry
exceeded all expectations, attracting over 5 million riders in its first year. The overwhelming response solidified its place as a crucial part of New York City’s transit system, offering a seamless and enjoyable commuting alternative.

A Recognized and Trusted Transit Brand
Through cohesive branding and marketing, NYC Ferry became an instantly recognizable part of the city’s transportation network. Its strong visual identity helped establish trust and reliability among daily commuters and tourists alike.

Official Adoption of the NYC Ferry Map
The NYC Ferry map, developed in close collaboration with MTA engineers, was officially adopted in 2017. Praised for its bright, compact, and user-friendly design, it successfully guided passengers through the city's waterways while adhering to strict transit mapping standards.

National Award Recognition
The branding and marketing efforts earned national acclaim, winning multiple prestigious awards, including the 2017 Silver Davey Award for Integrated Campaign-Promotional/Branding and the 2017 Silver Summit International Marketing Effectiveness Award for Integrated Campaign – Consumer.

A Lasting Impact on NYC Transportation
By seamlessly integrating with the city’s existing transit infrastructure, NYC Ferry not only enhanced daily commuting but also set a new standard for modern, user-centric public transportation branding.

The Results & Accomplishments

Intricate Illustration Series

NYC Ferry commissioned a series of highly detailed illustrations for their homepage hero carousel, designed to rotate and enhance visual engagement. They sought artwork that highlighted key locations along the routes while pushing creative boundaries in intricacy and detail. Each illustration was crafted from scratch, requiring 30–60 hours of meticulous work. Below are four samples from the final series.

Sample Route Schedule & NYC Ferry Map

The NYC Ferry map has been a prominent transit map displayed in subways, piers, bus shelters, and various locations throughout the city since 2017.
